Fee Changes to Begin March 1st

Beginning March 1st, 2010 The Library will initiate a $1.00 fee for all completed interlibrary loan transactions, even if the item is cancelled or not picked up.  The fee will be collected as your item is picked up at the Circulation Desk.  The Library Board approved this small charge for a valuable, but labor intensive service due to the recent loss of revenue from our municipal appropriations.

The Friends of the East Brunswick Public Library is Ready for Biggest Sale in Central New Jersey
If you are looking for fantastic deals on great books, then The Friends of the East Brunswick Library has just the thing for you. Visit The Friends’ Bargain Book and Media Sale to be to be held at the East Brunswick Square Mall from Monday, March 15, to Sunday, March 21, during mall hours.

This is The Friends’ biggest event of the year and the most popular book sale in Central New Jersey. Customers get to pick from a variety of hardcovers, paperbacks, best sellers, cook books, history books, mysteries, classics and more all at affordable prices. You’ll also get to choose from an assortment of music, audio books, videos and DVDs. For the kids, librarians will perform a puppet show on March 17 and 18 at 7:30 p.m. each day, so make sure you head to the mall for great books at great prices! The sale will be held in the JC Penny court. Mall hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Friends of the East Brunswick Public Library Needs Your help!
Volunteers are needed to help with The Friends’ Bargain Book and Media Sale to be held at the East Brunswick Square Mall from Monday, March 15, to Sunday, March 21.

When:

All week long, but especially for:

• Set- up on Sunday evening before the sale begins.
• Cleanup immediately after the opening on Monday night
• Take down on Sunday after the sale ends.

This is The Friends’ biggest event of the year and the most popular book sale in Central New Jersey. We need you to help keep it running smoothly by volunteering to help throughout the week, or to set up or clean up. 

Customers get to choose from thousands of books, including popular fiction, mysteries, science, health and more, all in hardcover, paperback or on CD. Music CDs, video games, DVDs and videos also will be for sale!

 The sale will be held at the Brunswick Square Mall on Route 18 at the JC Penny Court. Mall hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Please fill out the Booksale Volunteer Signup form (one per person please) and indicate the shift(s) for which you are available.  Someone will contact you to confirm your assigned time.  Your email address (while not required) would be most appreciated.

The Puppets are back! The Eleventh Annual Phyllis Noar Puppetry Festival begins in February.

 On Sunday, Feb. 7, join ventriloquist and magician Linda Holliday for the “Fun & Fantasy Show.” Magic, audience participation, music and songs, and of course, puppets, make this show perfect for families with children age 3 and up.

On Sunday, Feb. 21, the Galapagos Puppet Theatre will present “The Banana Princess,” which will feature puppets and choreography for families with children ages 4 and up. Each performance will be shown twice, 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at the Circulation Desk for $2. Members of the Friends of the Library will be given first seating for each show. The Phyllis Noar Puppetry Festival is sponsored by the Phyllis Noar Memorial Fund of the Friends of the Library to celebrate the life of the late library advocate and past president of the Friends.

If you’re a fan of movies or books, then you’ll want to meet James T. Fisher, author of “On the Irish Waterfront,” on Thursday, March 4, from 7 to 8 p.m., at the East Brunswick Public Library. Dr. Fisher will recount the story of one of Hollywood’s all time classic movies, Elia Kazan’s “On the Waterfront,” and how it tells the story of the world’s most profitable harbor and the betrayal and redemption it faced in both real life and behind the scenes. His book depicts the quintessential gangster era that infiltrated the New York and New Jersey waterfront in the 1900’s and the demise of its empire in the 1950’s. Get rid of some of those excuses during Myths of Exercise and Fitness at the East Brunswick Public Library on Wednesday, March 10, from 7 to 8 p.m. Join Ned Webber, Certified Personal Trainer and Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach, as he discusses common misconceptions about exercise and answers related questions. Stop believing the myths you use for not exercising or for your lack of success and get on the road to fitness during this free event. Drop by the East Brunswick Public Library as the Jewish Choir of Central New Jersey once again fills the building with music on Sunday, March 7, from 3 to 4 p.m. Under the direction of two local cantors, Anna West Ott and Sheldon Levin, the Jewish Choir of Central NJ Makhelat HaMercaz will present a stirring program spanning the spectrum of Jewish experience and traditions.  Enjoy a repertoire of pieces included in their journey around the world including “Tzadik Katamar” in African style, “Lo Yisa Goy” in Caribbean style, several beautiful Ladino songs, new songs from Israel, the U.S. and much more. Panel of experts to discuss Haiti at EB Library
Learn more about Haiti at the Library
Thursday, March 11th at 7 p.m.

With most of the country devastated by an earthquake in January, now is an excellent time to learn more about Haiti. Come to the Library for Haiti: It’s History and Culture on Thursday, March 11, at 7 p.m. and learn about the traditional beliefs, myths, tales and practices of the Haitian people. This informative panel discussion will be chaired by Professor Angus Kress Gillespie, a folklorist who has researched Haitian culture through scholarship and fieldwork. Keynote speaker Jeff Richter, a retired Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army Reserve, former Haiti Desk officer for the 358th Civil Affairs Brigade, will be a part of an expert panel that also includes the author of “Closure,” Lt. Bill Keegan, P.A.P.D. (Ret.) who recently led a H.E.A.R.T. 9/11 team during the search and rescue operation in Haiti. Come by for an interesting program that will help you better understand this fascinating country. Get a behind the scenes look at how movies are made during the East Brunswick Public Library’s new “Film Making” series. Stop by on Saturday, Feb 27, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. when writer and director Jaffar Mahmood introduces and discusses his independent film, Shades of Ray. The unrated film stars Zachary Levi as a half-Caucasian, half-Pakistani man wrestling with his mixed identity and his parents’ separation, all while waiting for a response to a marriage proposal. Stop by for this moving, and enlightening event.

Come celebrate East Brunswick’s 150th Birthday

Come celebrate East Brunswick’s 150th Birthday
Celebrate East Brunswick’s 150th birthday at the East Brunswick Public Library with a variety of events scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 28, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Kicking off the two-hour party will be a trumpet fanfare by students from the East Brunswick Public Schools.  Other performances include the Simplicity String Quartet, the East Brunswick High School Jazz Ensemble, the Community Chorus and a piano soloist. You will “Meet Our Mayors” and view exhibits on the history of our town by the East Brunswick Historical Society and fire and rescue organizations. Plus, we will announce the winners of the “History of East Brunswick” poster contest and “What East Brunswick Means to Me” essay contest sponsored by the East Brunswick Public Schools. Of course, no birthday would be complete without a birthday cake, so come by for a free slice. It promises to be a great time, so don’t miss it. This free event is sponsored by the Township of East Brunswick, the East Brunswick Historical Society and The Library.

In addition, EBTV will celebrate the township’s birthday with special historical videos from the station’s archives. Each show will be televised for one week, at four convenient times :Mondays at 10 a.m.; Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m.; and Sundays and Thursdays at 8 p.m.. Here’s the schedule:

  • Feb. 7-11, 2010: Focus on New Jersey featuring Mayor Jean Walling (1973);
  • Feb. 14-18, 2010: Our Varied Past with host Rich Walling and featuring William Fox and John Runyon (1982);

Library Annual Magazine Sale To Run Thursday, February 11 through Monday, February 15
Need a good magazine to cozy up to during those cold winter days and nights? The Library never lets you down.

The Library's Annual Magazine Sale will begin Thursday, February 11 and run through Monday, February 15 and will include all 2008 and some 2009 issues of popular magazines.    Magazines will be for sale all hours that the library is open and will cost $2  per packet of 6 -12 magazines.  Tables will be set up at the front entrance with bundles of magazines to satisfy even the most discriminating reader’s palette.  You’ll find bundles labeled Home, Business, Health, Science, Technology, Fashion, Sports, Cooking, and Hobbies
