PC Literacy I

An introduction to basic computer use: includes keyboard and mouse skills, clicking and scrolling, and an introduction to computer terminology. There are no prerequisites.

PC Literacy II

Continuation of computer basics from PC Literacy I. Participants will learn how to execute basic computer tasks including copying and pasting, creating, editing and saving documents, print preview and printing. Students will also receive an introduction to the basic layout and components of program toolbars.
Prerequisite: PC Literacy I class or the ability to use a mouse and basic keyboarding skills.

Internet IV: The Interactive Web

Explore some of the best of the fabulous and free tools on the Web with this tour of some of the hottest technologies currently available. This new class will introduce you to sites that offer file sharing, image editing, online shopping, social networking, organization aids and more. Learn and enjoy some of the newest and most useful tools that will put you on the cutting edge of technology.
Prerequisite: Internet I and II with additional Internet searching practice or its equivalent AND an active Gmail account. NOT for Beginners!

Demystifying Blogs and RSS: Easy Access to the Info You Want

An introduction to blogs and RSS feeds. The course will cover subscribing to blogs with Bloglines and finding feeds that interest you.

Introduction to the New Microsoft Office

An introduction to the changes in Office 2007 and 2010, including the ribbon, the Quick Access Toolbar, the new File tab, including the new Backstage view, the Mini toolbar, and the new file formats.
Prerequisite:PC Literacy or familiarity with the mouse and the keyboard.

An introduction to word processing skills. Learn how to create, edit and save documents; how to format and print; along with tips and hints. Offered in MS Office 2010.

Microsoft Word II

Students will build on the skills learned in the Introduction to MS Word. Learn to do paragraph formatting and about TAB settings, create headers and footers, use Find and Replace, insert bullets and numbers, subscripts and superscripts, AutoCorrect entries, and Word Art.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Microsoft Word or knowledge of how to create, edit and save documents; how to format and print, copy and paste, and familiarity with the ribbon in MS Office. Offered in MS Office 2010.

Microsoft Word III

Students will continue to build on the skills learned in MS Word II. Add interest to your documents by learning how to add and format tables and columns, as well as footnotes and endnotes. Pick up new skills for inserting images; and learn the basics of mail merge for letters, labels and envelopes. Offered in Office 2010.

Microsoft Word IV

Students learn advanced Word document formatting and editing skills in this class. Content will cover using and creating styles and templates, inserting a table of contents (the easy way once you have employed styles), themes, cross references, reviewing documents and password protection. Offered in Office 2010.
Prerequisites: MS Word III or intermediate Word processing skills, including copying and pasting, editing and saving, multitasking and more. Attendees must be able to easily navigate to shared files and be comfortable typists.

Microsoft Excel Basics

An introduction to the spreadsheet program. Learn how to create, edit and save spreadsheets; how to use formulas and print; along with tips and hints. Offered in Office 2010.
Prerequisite: MS Word class or equivalent PC experience. The Introduction to the New Microsoft Office is recommended.

Microsoft Excel II

Learn intermediate skills in the popular spreadsheet program. Learn how to create formulas, copy and past formulas and text, freeze and unfreeze panes, hide and unhide columns, insert, rename and delete worksheets, sort and filter data, create custom headers and footers and work with comments. Offered in Office 2010.
Prerequisite: Excel Basics or equivalent PC experience. Introduction to the New Microsoft Office is recommended.

Microsoft Excel III

Continue advancing your intermediate skills in Excel. Learn how to use the data tab to import data, do more work with formulas, create simple macros for repetitive tasks and explore more of the page layout options. As time permits, students will also explore Excel templates and conditional formatting in Excel 2010.

Prerequisite: Excel II or equivalent PC experience. Introduction to the New Microsoft Office is recommended.

Microsoft Excel IV

Continue your mastery of Excel in this new class offering. Learn how to create and modify pivot tables,to protect cells and worksheets, to create and use the payment function, to create and use forms for data entry, to use the VLookup function, learn the advantages for defining data as a table, and how to use Excel as an architectural design tool. In addition, the class will offer an overview of best practices for spreadsheet design. Offered in Office 2010.

Prerequisite: Excel III or equivalent PC experience. Introduction to the New Microsoft Office is recommended.

Microsoft PowerPoint Basics

Learn basic PowerPoint skills for creating and editing presentations;as well as tips for viewing and saving. Presentation software guidelines used by professional trainers to create a professional looking slide show will also be shown.
Prerequisite: Students MUST be comfortable using MS Word and know how to copy and paste, and move between open programs. Introduction to the New Microsoft Office is recommended. Offered in Office 2010.

Microsoft PowerPoint II

Students will learn to perform a variety of advanced tasks to embellish their powerpoint presentations.  They will learn intermediate skills such as creating Slide Masters, using templates and pick up detailed skills for adding images (clipart, shapes, WordArt and more) to their shows and manipulating them. They will also learn how to insert charts. Animations and transitions basics will also be covered. Offered in Office 2010.
Prerequisite: PowerPoint Basics or equivalent PC experience. Introduction to the New Microsoft Office is recommended or knowledge of MS Office Ribbon functionality.

Microsoft PowerPoint III -

Students will continue with the advanced topics learned in PowerPoint II. Topics covered include creating custom designs, dimming text, using SmartArt graphics, rehearsed timings, looping, hidden slides, quarter screen viewing and more as time permits. Offered in Office 2010.
Prerequisite: PowerPoint II or equivalent PowerPoint experience. Introduction to the New Microsoft Officeis also recommended or knowledge of Microsoft Ribbon functionality.

MS Outlook -First of a Three Part Series

Learn to use MS Outlook for your email and personal information manager. Includes an introduction to the Outlook application interface; creating, reading, replying, and forwarding messages; creating a signature; and creating personal folders.
Prerequisites: PC Literacy I and II and any introductory Microsoft Office class - the Introduction to MS Word or PowerPoint, Excel Basics, or Introduction to the New Microsoft Office or equivalent experience. Offered in Office 2010. For registrants who have the MS Office Suite.

MS Outlook - Second of a Three Part Series

Building upon the skills learned in MS Outlook Part I, this course covers more advanced Outlook topics. Students will learn how to create and use contacts, attach files, search for messages, create rules for managing your mail, use the calendar and tasks.
Prerequisite: MS Outlook Part One class or equivalent email experience. For registrants who have the MS Office Suite.

MS Outlook - Third of a Three Part Series

This class is for users who have mastered the topics in Outlook I and II. It will cover some of the new features available in Outlook 2010 and more advanced topics such as adding a business card to a signature, creating contact groups, creating rules and alerts such has how to change the color of messages in your inbox and other folders, adding your gmail account to Outlook, and more as time permits.
Prerequisite: MS Outlook Parts I and II classes or mastery of the same content. For registrants who have the MS Office Suite.

Specialized Computer Training Classes Include:

Sign up for specialized Internet training classes after completing our introductory classes. For further training, please sign up at the Information Services desk for a place on the waiting list for your class, or send an email to the Information Services desk. Classes will be scheduled when sufficient numbers sign up. We will call people from the lists. Please be sure that you indicate the times that you are available to take a class, so that we can take that into consideration when we schedule.

Search, Checkout and Download: Downloading Audiobooks and eBooks

Learn how to download free ebooks and downloadable audiobooks from the library’s growing collection and other free resources online.
Learn how to transfer ebooks to some of the major ereader devices including the Barnes and Noble Nook and Sony Reader. Find out how you can listen to audiobooks on many of the most popular mobile devices like the iPhone, iPod, Blackberry and Android phones. Please note that the Kindle ereader is not compatible with library ebooks due to the manufacturer's restrictions.

NOTE: Due to software restrictions attendees will not be able to transfer downloadable books to the devices inside the library. The instructor will demonstrate the steps and attendees will receive printed instructions for following the directions on their home computer.
Prerequisite: Students should have intermediate Internet skills. For library cardholders only.

This course will teach participants how to use Ancestry Library Edition, available at all of The Library's public computers, to research their family's history.

Specialized Business Classes

Sign up for specialized training classes for small business owners. New in 2011, The Library is offering a three part introductory series to the QuickBooks software, a popular small business financial software. It is designed for individuals who are just starting out using QuickBooks, but have a working knowledge of the Windows environment. The software used is QuickBooks Premier, Accountant's Edition 2010.

Classes run for 4 1/2 hours including a 1/2 hour lunch break. Each class costs $50 and must be paid in advance by cash, check or credit card. Checks are to be made payable to the East Brunswick Public Library. See events in the Library Calendar for registration details.

Introduction to QuickBooks, Level I

An introduction to the popular small business financial software. This hands-on class is designed for individuals who are just starting out with QuickBooks. This first class of a multipart series will include an introduction to the interface, talk about how to set up your company’s QuickBooks, and how to add and work with customers, vendors, accounts and inventory in the Customer and Vendor Centers, the Chart of Accounts and the Lists Menu. Offered using QuickBooks Premier 2010 Accountant's Edition.
Prerequisite: Working knowledge of the Windows environment.

Introduction to QuickBooks, Level II

This class is designed for individuals who are just starting out with QuickBooks. This second hands-on class of a multipart series will include working with your accounts, recording sales information, handling payments, and, time permitting, entering and paying bills. Offered using QuickBooks Premier 2010 Accountant's Edition

Typing Tutorials

The Library does not offer classes in touch typing. However there are a number of web sites that offer free online typing lessons and practice. Please check our Internet Search Tools - Tutorials page in our Recommended Websites Section of Research Tools in our main navigation. Some of these sites may contain audio directions. You must bring your own headphones or purchase earbuds in the vending machine for $1.25.
