Sophie Clark's novel "Cruel Is the Light" presents a unique story that differs from the usual YA formula. The story follows Selene who works as a Vatican exorcist and Jules who hides dangerous secrets from his time as a soldier. In a world filled with demons and holy magic along with political corruption, these two characters united together despite their differences. One discovery after another, the two characters start to doubt their entire belief system which they have followed since their first days of existences The novel creates an experience for readers with its unique atmospheric elements. Sophie Clark builds a gothic environment similar to those dark fantasy settings that would come to mind. Through her depiction of destroyed urban areas and sacred buildings which exist in a state of never ending danger that creates a spooky experience. The story develops emotional depth through Selene and Jules relationship which creates a balance between their sarcastic behavior with their vulnerable moments and the high intensity action scenes. The novel still held on to your average romantic storytelling while it also examines religious beliefs and social authority along with personal wounds through an emotional approach which surpasses typical romance books. The book creates a world with such compelling characters that readers will keep thinking about their experiences after they finish reading it, a typical YA book fan will definitely give it a 5 out of 5 after they witness every single event in the book, the only reason I gave a 4 star is because I thought that the story was dragged on a bit too long and while the aethetics are pleasing they couldn't held on for that long.
