Peace Corps

Begun in the 1961 by President John F. Kennedy, the Peace Corps has a trifold mission: helping interested countries meet their needs for trained men and women, and promoting a better understanding of and by Americans. Peace Corps volunteers have lived and worked in more than 139 developing countries since the organization's inception. These volunteers, "working in the cause of peace," provide services from AIDS education to environmental preservation.
