The East Brunswick Public Library Celebrates Additional Space and Services
Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony
Sunday, November 8th from 2 to 4 p.m.
The East Brunswick Public Library is pleased to announce the completion of a 2,000-square-foot "push out" that will provide more space for children’s programming, quiet reading and study and information on health issues. A ribbon- cutting ceremony for the $230,000 capital project will be held on Sunday, November 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. On hand will be Mayor David Stahl, Township Council members, the East Brunswick Public Library Board of Trustees, Friends of the Library, representatives from the Department of Aging and more. Also being celebrated will be the newest addition to the Library family, A Novel Café, which recently began serving delicious food, drinks and snacks at the Library.
The push out, which was accomplished by "pushing out" under an overhang in the back of the library, is an addition to the original 1976 building and includes an adult quiet reading area, a quiet study room and a children’s programming room. The adult quiet reading area is open to adults 18 and older and includes a fireplace and comfortable furniture provided by the Friends of the Library to give it the relaxing, stress- free feeling of your very own living room. In conjunction with the construction project, the Library won a contract with INFOLINK, the regional library cooperative, to create a concept space for the baby boom generation and their elders. The contract is being used to launch a "Just For the Health of It" initiative which will provide a consumer health pull out collection, in-depth medical research and a customized computer interface to help residents find the most up-to-date information on any health or wellness issue. Please join us in on November 8th to celebrate this long awaited addition to the Library and the East Brunswick community.

The Library has some great “Friends.”
The East Brunswick Friends of the Library received the 2009 Libraries of Middlesex Friends Award during a ceremony at Farrington Manor on Tuesday, Sept. 29.
The group has always been strong supporters and advocates of The Library, providing funding for an amazing array of programs for children, enhancing The Library’s mission to provide lifelong learning and particularly, to making the Library welcoming to everyone in our diverse community.
The list of Friends accomplishments this year is a long one. In 2009, in order to help library staff assist customers in these tough economic times, the Friends of the Library funded a wide array of adult programming aimed at job hunters, entrepreneurs and alternative employment opportunities. Programs teaching computer skills, resume writing and interview techniques were added to the adult programming lineup thanks to funding supplied by the Friends of the Library.
In addition, as construction on the new library “push-out” nears completion, The Friends have committed funds to furnish an Adult Quiet Reading Area with living room furnishings that will set the tone for a peaceful, serene reading space in The Library. The Friends generosity and commitment to provide the “extras” that are enjoyed by all residents did not stop there. They also sponsored new carpeting and a futuristic bulletin board in the Youth Services department.
In the midst of a difficult cut to The Library budget, The Friends have been a “shining light.” Responding to the challenge head on, The Friends’ Executive Board held planning meetings all summer long, developing new ideas with regard to fundraising, membership, and marketing, as well as a strategic planning to help the beloved East Brunswick Public Library move forward in the coming year.
