Learn How To Stand Out
Use the Library’s online software
to make you a standout candidate for employment
Thursday, August 13th, 7 - 9 p.m.
Learn how to shine during your job search from the comfort of your own home. Get a lesson on how to use the Library’s OptimalInterview and OptimalPortolio to refine your interviewing skills and create your own professional portfolio website during a seminar on Thursday, August 13, at the East Brunswick Public Library. This online software allows you to practice one-on-one and group interviews and to create your own practice interview questions. You’ll be able to record and play back your responses and see how you’re doing. You’ll also learn how to use Optimal tools to create your own portfolio and website, giving you the tools to you need to make employers take notice.
This course is open to Library cardholders. Prerequisite: Internet I and MS Word I or basic Internet and word processing experience. By signing up you are certifying that you have the basic skills required to complete this class. Register by visiting www.ebpl.org. Then click on August 13th on the Library Calendar on the home page and then the Optimal Resume class. Click on the Sign Me Up link and supply your library card and PIN numbers. Once your card is validated, supply your information in the form and click the Submit button and you are set.

Bollywood Dance Workshop on Tuesday, August 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. Join Madhavi Devasthali of the Nupur School of Dance and learn the latest Bollywood dance moves to the tune of “Jai Ho,” from the hit movie “Slumdog Millionaire.” This free event is open to tweens, teens and adults.

Library migrates to new Integrated Library System
On July 15th The Library went live on a new Integrated Library System (ILS). The new system is an “open source” software system that is used around the world.
The advantage of using an open source system is that every library on the system can purchase enhancements to customize features they would like to offer to their customers and all libraries using the system can take advantage of new features commissioned by other libraries. According to Dianne Hall, Information Technology manager, “The Library needed to migrate away from the Horizon system because the company that developed Horizon was merged into another company and the new company decided to stop development on Horizon and migrate libraries to a system that is not as good as Horizon. Our contract with Horizon expires on July 31 so we have been researching alternative systems for more than six months. We are delighted to be on the cutting edge of a new generation of Integrated Library Systems.
Our new system offers flexibility and the opportunity to offer our customers new features for many years into the future. Most significant for us is that the annual maintenance cost for this system is 50% less than the system we were using.”
Library customers have commented on the fabulous and easy to use results pages on the new ILS. Customers have also alerted staff to some software glitches that have showed up since the “go live” date. We are asking all our customers to please be patient as we work out some of the start-up issues and get the new system fully on line with our very unique and customer oriented features.
Login to Library Website Restored
You may once again log in to your library website accounts to register for events in the library calendar or comment on library forums or log in to Lexis Nexis.
The server that validates user library card and PIN numbers for online registration for library events or to comment on a library forum has been fixed.
Presley And Melody Return
Presley & Melody to bring interactive show to East Brunswick Public Library

Musicians Presley and Melody have wowed East Brunswick audiences before with their dynamic and interactive musical performances. Well, the duo is ready to do it again on Saturday, August 8, at 7 p.m. at the East Brunswick Public Library. The band’s brand of joyful, peppy songs and use of visual props will transform spectators, or “Participators” as they call them, into their engaging concert experience. The East Brunswick Public Library will be closed for one day on Tuesday, July 28 due to an ongoing construction project.
The East Brunswick Public Library will be closed for one day on Tuesday, July 28 due to the ongoing construction project of the new children’s programming room and adult quiet reading area. The library meeting rooms will remain open for the day and all events scheduled in the meeting rooms will take place. Customers attending the Foreign Film Festival at 1:30 and 7:30 pm should enter the library through the handicapped entrance located adjacent to the Senior Center parking lot. Other programs will be rescheduled as possible.

Get guitar tips from professional musician Matt Richards at the East Brunswick Public Library

Are dreams of white hot guitar solos and awesome guitar riffs filling your head? Then come to the East Brunswick Public Library on Thursday, Aug. 6, from 7 to 8 p.m. where you’ll learn the same techniques used by some of the greatest musicians on the planet. Join guitarist Matt Richards as he shows you the skills and concepts he uses in his own playing. Matt will demonstrate and discuss finger style and flat-pick techniques, chord progressions and scales, improvisation, playing as a soloist and more. The program will end with a special presentation on the 11-string glissentar. Matt is a faculty member at Cheltenham Art & Music Center and the Academy of Community Music. He frequently conducts workshops and master classes in conjunction with his performances.

Recognizing A Volunteer
Teen volunteer Ayesha Rizvi awarded scholarship from East Brunswick Friends of the Library
Congratulations to Ayesha Rizvi, who was awarded a $500 Friends of the Library Scholarship on June 9 during a ceremony at East Brunswick High School. Ayesha has been a volunteer with the Library since she was in the eighth grade working with the Teen Library Connection. She later moved up to TLC Assistant Coordinator and also works as a Teen Buddy in the Library’s math and reading programs and as a volunteer with the Summer Reading Club. “Ayesha is truly delightful,” said Youth Services Librarian Suzanne Klein. “Her approachable manner and easy laugh have made her a wonderful match for the Teen Buddies Program and her partners have thrived under her attention.”
Ayesha said she’s thrilled at receiving the award. “I was so excited because I know a lot of people work at the library, and many have done it a long time. People work hard to get through college and every little bit helps.” Ayesha said volunteering at the Library is a reward in and of itself. “Every single time I’ve worked there, even if it was for just one session, you see the kids’ reactions.”
