Register now for the East Brunswick Public Library’s latest computer class offerings. The January schedule offers the opportunity to register for two new courses: Excel III and Picture Perfect.  

Excel III :

Continue advancing your intermediate skills in Excel. Learn how to use the data tab to import data, do more work with formulas, create simple macros for repetitive tasks and explore more of the page layout options. As time permits, students will also explore Excel templates and conditional formatting in Excel 2010.

Prerequisite: Excel II or equivalent Excel experience.  Introduction to the New Microsoft Office class is recommended.

Picture Perfect

Don’t know what to do with the pictures from your digital camera? Explore some of the free online photo editing and management websites that allow you to accomplish many of your photo editing needs fast and, of course, for free. Learn how to remove red-eye, crop, resize, add special effects, share and create online photo books. This session will demonstrate and compare the features available at Shutterfly.com and Flickr.

Prerequisites:  Internet II or basic Internet navigation experience. By signing up you are certifying that you have the basic skills required to complete this class.

Requirements:  Attendees need to have a web-based email account in order to set up their Shutterfly accounts. They also need to bring some photographs in digital format (on a CD or flash drive) to upload to their new accounts.

Classes for January include:

All courses are offered using the latest Microsoft software - Windows 7 and Office 2010.

Registration is required.  All registrants should look at the class offerings carefully to insure that they have the necessary skills for each class.  Classes are two hours long and limited to 12 students per class. There is a $5 fee for cardholders and a $10 fee for non-cardholders. Fees will be added to a cardholder’s account and paid for at the Circulation desk. Register at the Library, by phone or by going to the event in the website Calendar and clicking on the Sign Me Up link.  Non-cardholders must pay at the time of registration, i.e. registrations must be in person.  For more information, please call 732-390-6767.

Proposal submission deadline is 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 7th.

The Board of Trustees of the East Brunswick Public Library is currently accepting proposals for a consultant to create The Library’s next Strategic Plan. The deadline to submit a proposal is 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 7th. 

Respondents must follow the proposal guidelines included in the Request for Proposal. (Click here for RFP documents.) A public bid opening will be held on January 7th at 4:30 p.m. in Meeting Room 1. For additional information, please call Library Administration at (732) 390-6781.

Read Library ebooks on Apple and Android devices with two new apps

Library customers can now download and read DRM-protected library ebooks on Android and Apple devices including the iPhone and iPad.

 Library customers can now download and read DRM-protected library ebooks on Android and Apple devices including the iPhone and iPad. Bluefire Reader allows users to transfer ebooks to their Apple device via email or through iTunes. The app works best with ebooks in epub format as opposed to pdf format. Also, the latest version of the Overdrive Media Console v. 2 now supports ebooks. These apps can be downloaded directly from the app store on the device. High school juniors and seniors and their parents are invited to attend College Search Process 101 for tips on how to find a college that is right for them.

Demystify the college search process at The East Brunswick Public Library. Join Barbara Wichinsky, former Director of Guidance and an independent consultant, on Thursday, January 6, from 7 to 8 p.m. for College Search Process 101. Ms. Wichinsky will discuss how to select a college, the admissions process, confusing terminology and more. This free program is open to sophomores and juniors and is not something you will want to miss. High school students must be accompanied by a parent to this presentation.

The Library is excited to announce that we have started circulating eReaders to library cardholders!

With funding from the East Brunswick Friends of the Library, we have been able to purchase 5 Barnes and Noble Nook eReaders that will  be preloaded with over 100 of the latest popular titles. Customers will be able to take the readers for the normal 21-day book lending period and enjoy a vast library of material using the latest technology. Come by the East Brunswick Public Library at 3 p.m., Sunday, December 12, and hear Songs of Life, Love and Happiness when vocalist Carol Heffler and pianist Dave Schlossberg perform.

 The program will include jazz standards, bossa nova and original music and is sure to leave you wanting more. Mr. Schlossberg’s expressive arrangements and original piano pieces combined with Ms. Heffler’s beautiful voice is an experience not to be missed. This free program is sponsored by The Friends of the Library.
