YA & Tween Author Visit

Posted June 21, 2015

Teens and tweens can kick off summer reading this year by attending a panel of five young adult and tween authors at the East Brunswick Public Library on Monday, June 22nd at 7 p.m.

Meet authors Jennifer Salvato Doktorski, Yvonne Ventresca, Crissa-Jean Chappell, Jennifer Ann Mann, and Russel Like.  They will discuss their books, the life of an author—and they want to hear questions from the very audience for which they write.  The event will be followed by a book signing, with copies available for purchase. Every attendee will be entered into the chance to win great giveaways.

This event is open to teens and tweens in grades 4 and up.

Jennifer Salvato Doktorski is the author of the YA novels, How My Summer Went Up in Flames (Simon Pulse 2013); Famous Last Words (Henry Holt and Co., 2013); which was named a Bank Street College Best Children’s Book of the Year; and The Summer After You and Me (Sourcebooks Fire, May 2015).

Jennifer Mann is the author of “The Sunny Sweet Series,” a humorous and quirky set of middle grade stories published by Bloomsbury Children’s USA. Her next effort—SCAR—is a historical fiction novel set during the Revolutionary War to be published by Boyds Mills Press/Calkins Creek in 2016. Jennifer’s short stories have been published by Highlights for Children, where she won the Highlights for Children 2007 Fiction Contest.

Yvonne Ventresca is the author of Pandemic (Sky Pony, 2014), Avril Lavigne (Lucent Books, 2007), and Publishing (Lucent Books, 2005). She has written instructional video scripts about technology, numerous articles for children and adults, a nonfiction book for teens about careers in publishing, and a biography for teens about the singer Avril Lavigne.

Crissa-Jean Chappell was born in Miami, Florida and now lives in Brooklyn, New York. Her debut YA novel, Total Constant Order (HarperTeen) is a NYPL Book For The Teen Age and a VOYA Perfect Ten. Chappell's second novel, NARC (Flux Books) was recently optioned for film. More than Good Enough (Flux Books) is her most recent novel. A two-time winner of the Florida Book Award for young adult literature, she is also a professor of creative writing and cinema studies.

Russel Like is the author of After The Blue, A Bowl Of Fruit, and A Whale In The Woods.  Russel is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Russel’s first book, After The Blue, has been used to teach satire in a number of middle schools and high schools in the U.S. and Canada.

The Hound of the Baskervilles: a staged radio play Saturday, 6/20

The Hound of the Baskervilles: a staged radio play Saturday, 6/20

Posted June 08, 2015

Sherlock Holmes lovers: come enjoy the story of the famous detective and his good friend Doctor Watson on one of their most famous (and darkest) adventures.

On Saturday, June 20 at 2 p.m., the East Brunswick Public Library will host critically acclaimed Raconteur Radio’s production of The Hound of the Baskervilles.  Raconteur Radio recreates the experience of radio plays of the Golden Age, from props to costumes to the iconic “fat boy” microphone.

The eerie mists of Dartmoor and the black block of Baskerville Hall are the setting for this chilling program, based on the classic Arthur Conan Doyle novel. Into this atmosphere of melancholy moors, sinister secrets, deadly threats, and canine apparitions comes the supremely rational Sherlock Holmes—a man described by his friend Watson as "the most perfect reasoning machine the world has ever seen."

“Beware the moor in those dark hours when evil is exalted,” the superstitious denizens of Devonshire caution the good detective. But the hunt is on as Holmes and Watson, in their most terrifying case, ignore the warnings and search for their four-legged suspect, hoping the hulking hound proves, when all is said and done, to be more delusion than demon.

Come be immersed in the fog of the moors, and be taken back in time to Dartmoor in Devon of England’s West Country.

The performance features Laurence Mintz as Sherlock Holmes, Michael Jarmus as Dr. John Watson, and Jason Jackson as Sir Henry Baskerville (and assorted other characters).  This production is recommended for ages 8 and up.

This program is co-sponsored by the Friends of the East Brunswick Public Library and the East Brunswick Arts Commission.

Raconteur Radio stages theatrical presentations of vintage radio plays, great works of literature, and pop culture parodies for live audiences throughout the tri-state area. For more info visit http://raconteurradionj.blogspot.com/

This year’s theme is “Heroes.”  “The Record.Play committee chose the theme Heroes because it can be interpreted in so many ways and is accessible to the different age groups…we are very excited to see how our local filmmakers run with it,” said Interim Director Maryann Ralph when the festival was first announced.

This year’s judges include:

He currently runs his own business, Conlon Video Works, providing production services primarily for local and national PBS programs.  Joe has been recognized for his work, with nine Emmy awards in the New York and Philadelphia markets.

Zack Morrison is a MFA film candidate at Columbia University studying screenwriting & directing. His accolades include screenings at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013 and 2014; Best Student Film awards from the Garden State Film Festival, New Jersey Film Festival, and Jersey Shore Film Festival; and a collegiate lifetime achievement award from Campus Moviefest in Hollywood.   Zack graduated from East Brunswick High School in 2010, and attributes his love of filmmaking to participating in the Video Production and Humanities programs at EBHS.
