East Brunswick Public Library is offering its customers a chance to take care of their library fines and help the community at the same time. The library is launching a "Food for Fines" program from June 23-30.
 
For every item of non-perishable, non-expired food or personal hygiene product donated, you can have $3 in fines waived from their library account or a free replacement card. Customers can have a maximum of $12 waived in fines for a total of four items donated. Fees for lost or damaged materials cannot be forgiven through this program.
Food collected will be donated to the Crisis Room at Aldersgate United Methodist Church of East Brunswick. Located at 562 Ryders Lane, this food bank serves community residents in need. Information about the Crisis Room can be found online.You can also drop off additional donations for the Crisis Room at this time.
 
Acceptable donations include:
boxed meals * canned food * peanut butter * rice * cereal  pasta * crackers * dried beans  * tuna * diapers * toothpaste  soap * laundry detergent
 
Donations cannot be expired, damaged or opened. No trial-sized items accepted.

The library looks to connect area residents with non-profit groups at a special volunteer fair for adults on Thursday, June 29 from 6-8:30 pm.

“Our customers regularly ask us for information about non-profits that are looking for volunteers,” said Melissa Hozik, Adult Programming Librarian. “This event is a great way to connect would-be volunteers with organizations that need help.”

According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, there are approximately 1,576,296 volunteers in New Jersey, who donated the equivalent of $5.1 billion worth of service to their communities.

Organizations participating in the volunteer fair include: 
 

The volunteer fair is part of the library’s summer reading theme of “Build A Better World.” Throughout the summer, the library has several programs about civic engagement, including weekly TED Talk screenings and discussions, and a park clean-up on Saturday, July 29.
