The direct ancestor of the game we know as baseball developed in the New York City area during the 1840s and 50s, and New Jersey played an important developmental role in the these early days of our national pastime. John Zinn’s talk will focus on the game’s beginnings in New Jersey.  This will include a discussion of the Liberty Club of New Brunswick, the area's first base ball team which has something of a unique history. Zinn is an independent historian with special interest in the history of baseball as well as the Civil War.
