Friends Fall Meeting: Flat Daddy -- Behind Every Soldier is a Family

Posted November 04, 2013

The Friends Fall Meeting will include a free showing of the documentary "Flat Daddy: Behind Every Soldier is a Family." Thursday, November 14 • 7 p.m.

The East Brunswick Friends of the Library is joining the library in “Honoring Those Who Serve” with its Fall Meeting on Thursday, Nov. 14. Come join the Friends as they welcome guest speaker Betsy Nagler, co-director of the documentary Flat Daddy: Behind Every Soldier is a Family. Following a screening of the film, guests will be able to speak with Nagler.

The film focuses on how some military families have incorporated “Flat Daddies” and “Heroes on a Stick,” to track the travels of their love ones while they are deployed. Only 1 percent of Americans currently serve in the U.S. Military, but their families have borne the disproportionate burden of more than a decade at war.  Using these two-dimensional surrogates as a connecting thread, “Flat Daddy” follows four such families over the course of a year to explore the lasting impact of the war on those left behind. This free program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
