CANCELLED History of the Wines of Burgundy and Champagne
02/20/2019 | 07:00PM - 08:30PM
Meeting Room 3
This lecture has been CANCELLED due to the storm.
This lecture will introduce you to the astounding cast of characters, the regions, and the grapes that helped create two of the world’s most evocative names in wine: Burgundy and Champagne.
In telling the history of these wines and these regions, including how they can be visited today, Gary Lee Kraut’s informative and entertaining lecture will appeal to armchair travelers and overseas travelers alike, and to novice wine drinkers as well as connoisseurs.
You’ll learn how competing regions growing similar grapes became brothers at arms to conquer the world of wine. You’ll meet, among others, Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, who declared pinot noir the grape of choice for red wines in his duchy; Louis XIV’s doctor Fagon, who blamed the wines of Champagne on the king’s fevers and so prescribed the wines of Burgundy; Dom Perignon, the monk who helped develop the sparkle in champagne; the Moets, the Chandons, the Cliquots and other wise businessmen and –women who marketed champagne around the world; the winegrowers who revolted against the use of “imported” grapes in champagne, and some of the producers that travelers can meet today in these wine-growing regions that have been lists by UNESCO as World Heritage.in vineyards and production methods that have been lists by UNESCO as World Heritage.
After the lecture, the audience will be able to exchange with Gary about their plans for wine touring in France.
