Author Sabeeha Rehman will hold a discussion on her book, Threading My Prayer Rug: One Woman’s Journey from Pakistani Muslim to American Muslim, a richly textured reflection on what it is like to be Muslim in America today.
The book has been listed by Booklist as Top 10 Religion & Spirituality Books 2016, and Top 10 Diverse Nonfiction books in 2017.
Sabeeha Rehman came to the U.S. from Pakistan in 1971 after a hurried arranged marriage. Raising Muslim children in the absence of a Muslim community was a daunting challenge so in the early 1980s, she began the work of establishing a Muslim community on Staten Island, which culminated in the building of a mosque. She has spent the last several decades in engaging in interfaith dialogue with faith communities.
This program is co-sponsored by the Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom Chapters of New Jersey and the East Brunswick Human Relations Council.
