This book is about Pen, a queer girl who struggles with her gender identity. Pen has to deal with her traditional parents and teachers; she knows that she is a girl, but she enjoys dressing and looking like "a punk druggie", as her mother likes to say. She is comfortable with the way she lives, except the people around her and the way society views her make life a lot harder than it needs to be. Throughout the book, Pen has to deal with bullying, friendship, familial problems, and love. The people who she thinks are her friends turn against her, sparking a feud that eventually results in police involvement. This book is simply amazing; it shatters illusions that society has deemed to be acceptable and is a fresh and new concept.
