Phyllis Reynolds Naylor based her 1993 young adult novel, The Boys Start the War, loosely on the historical rivalry between the Hatfields and the McCoys. In her novel, the Hatford boys feud with the Malloy girls. The story is told from the perspective of the two 4th graders: Wally and Caroline.
